Disability Awareness UK
|
| |
| A project of great importance
to the Saturday Venture Association is the promotion of
Disability Awareness UK. |
| |
| The project aims to bring
an increased awareness of disability in our society. We
are promoting the project in both public and state schools,
by speaking to the children and helping them to learn
what disability actually means, the pitfalls that need
to be overcome and most importantly the need for acceptance. |
| |
|
Children with minor disabilities
such as cleft-lip, dental bridges, lisping, stuttering,
etc., are often the target of bullying in schools and
through our Charity, we would like to assist in eradicating
this through education and awareness.
|
|
Visits to the schools include an Occupational
Therapist and it is hoped that, with the aid of further
fund raising, we will be able to not only increase our
visits (currently three per month) but improve them
to include visual aids and videos, computer presentations
and handouts. In an ever-developing technological age,
young children respond readily to presentations enhanced
in this way.
|
|
Finally, and most importantly
of all, we wish to increase our activities for the children
through, as an example, the provision of more help for
clubs, such as Sussex Interplay,
who strive to achieve facilities for safe play for disabled
youngsters, and on a similar basis as Acton
Saturday Venture Club and
Paddington Have-A-Go-Club.
